It was great to see so many parents at Parent Night. I hope you were able to get a peek into what a day in fifth grade looks like.
Students enjoyed reading your responses on our "Got Grit" board. Commitment, tenacity and perseverance are all traits linked to success. These traits encourage a confident mindset. Thank you so much for sharing your personal experiences! We will continue to focus on these traits throughout the year.
The math number puzzles will be in this week's
Friday envelope. Give them a try and ask your fifth grader if you have the correct answer.
These puzzles require students to apply their knowledge and use critical thinking skills to solve problems.

Math Unit 1- Factors, Multiples and Prime Factors, Multiplication and Division Strategies
Fifth graders are expected to know their multiplication facts up to 12's. Please have your child practice their math facts at home! They need to have them memorized so they can work with confidence and accuracy.

During "CRAFT" time we learned about picking the right book and the routines of Read to Self.
Students are reading with tenacity towards our class goal of 100 books! (We will continue to set class goals for books.) Once students complete a book they fill out a Book Card and share it with the class. They will bring home their Book Cards to share with you first, please sign the back of the card showing that they discussed the book with you.
Metacognition and Reading Strategies (Visualizing, Connections, Inferring, Questions)
Writing- We will begin researching and writing our Historical Journals in the upcoming weeks. The six trait focus will be on Ideas and Word Choice.
Note taking skills- Students will learn how to take notes and determine importance when reading text and watching videos.
Grammar- End Punctuation ( Quizzes in the Friday folder), Commas and Colons
Every Friday, there will be a quiz on the focus of the week.
This week students will be expected to show their mastery of comma rules.
Unit of Inquiry-
How We Express Ourselves, "This Land is Your Land, But Now It's My Land"
Our beginning provocation required students to look at how and why languages have spread across the globe. This led us to an inquiry into different explorers that discovered the Americas. Students shared their knowledge with their classmates by performing skits. Next, students took on the role of Social Studies Investigators as we learned about Roanoke, "The Lost Colony", and the different theories behind the mystery.
In the next few weeks, we will learn about the different American colonies, why they were colonized, the people that made up the colonies, the impact and different perspectives. Students will then pick a colony and write a historical journal based on a fictional character.
The summative assessment for this unit is an independent inquiry project into a country of interest that was colonized. Students will create a flip book that showcases their new knowledge.
Media Center- We are learning about our role as digital citizens and preparing for our blogging journey. Students are excited to begin. We will be going over blogging agreements and students will set up their blogs and will begin posting. Look for the first blog posts soon!
