How the World Works
"Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be?"
Central Idea- The physical properties of matter determine its state and its uses.
Lines of Inquiry-
The structure and properties of matter
How materials combine to form mixtures and solutions
The reactions that can occur when materials combine
This is a hands on exciting unit! This week we had a blast exploring the properties and states of ooblek.
Students are learning the skill of note taking during this unit.
Students will get to experience how matter works in the kitchen by making; butter, ice cream, popcorn and other edible treats. We will learn the importance of understanding matter when working in the kitchen.
The summative assessment for this unit is for students to choose a recipe at home, follow the recipe and explain the science behind the recipe. Students will bring in the recipe along with their scientific explanation and the edible product to share with their classmates.
A Scientific Cookbook will be created out of all of the recipes.

Art-Transforming/Changing a stuffed animal
Each student needs to bring in at least 2 stuffed animals that can be cut apart and put back together again.

ASSESSMENTS
The assessment folder will be sent home next week. Please review the assessments, sign and return to school.
HOMEWORK
5th Graders do have homework every day. Please check in with your child and ask to see the homework. Homework has been coming in incomplete or the quality does not meet expectations. Students have been using recess time when homework is incomplete. Students who miss homework on a regular basis will be put on a planner check in.
The amount of homework in middle school increases, students need to practice study habits and time management in order to be successful next year.
Reading response blogposts are scored. The score is private and can only be assessed by the blog owner. Ask your child to look at a reading response and the comments and score. Students are always encouraged to review and resubmit work to raise the score.
