This week we turned up the heat and headed to the kitchen/lab. We baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies and then wrote our scientific explanation about how the ingredients work together. The next day each group changed a variable in the recipe and baked a batch of cookies. They made a hypothesis and then conducted their experiment. Students were able to see, smell and taste the difference when changing a variable. They experimented by taking out the fat/butter, only using egg whites, substituting shortening for butter and substituting water for eggs.
Summative Assessment
Recipes are due this week. We will write the scientific explanation in class.
Next Monday, students need to bring in a small sample of their food for each student.
I hope you enjoy baking or cooking with your knowledgeable chef! Please ask them to explain what is happening scientifically. Students may want to take photos of the cooking process to include in their scientific explanation. This is optional and sketches or clipart may also be used.
